This piece refers to a time when the earth was covered by water and ravaged by rain and storms.
The large negative space represents the earth, the outer band the universe and the holes (another use of negative space as an object) are the heavenly bodies of our solar system. The storms are the diagonal shapes, the stalactites represent rain and the flat rectangle is the terra firma rising from the water to reveal the first sunrise.

Sun, Wind, Rain is an example of my landscape sculpture whereby elements are reduced to essential shapes, the sun contained in the negative space of the circle, the wind being straight lines and the rainrepresented by the wavy lines.

Rather than linear progression, the Meso American cultures viewed life, death, and the cosmos as a continuous circle of transformation. Thus, we and all things on earth are subject to the same cyclicality as all things in the universe, and we as children of the sun, follow the river of life, die and then climb back as the yet to be born.

This piece is one of my landscape series paying homage to the Mississippi River which is so important my home, New Orleans. This piece is visually interesting in that it looks the same from every direction.

This piece was inspired by a piece of jewelry that I saw in southern Mexico. Even is ancient times the Mayan’s had advanced astronomical knowledge and often used this knowledge as a theme in their art and design. Much of my work is inspired by the elegant simplicity of their ideas.
